New features available in iOS 17.5 – Apple encourages iPhone users to update

Apple released iOS 17.5, a software update that offers an array of new features and security patches for Apple devices. The update includes new functions in Apple News, Podcasts, notifications, and settings. For iPhone XS and later models, the update includes a “Repair State” mode that enforces a delay before changing important settings, particularly useful for those with “Stolen Device Protection.” This mode allows users to turn off “Find My” without delay at the Genius Bar for service, ensuring device ownership before continuing with repairs, according to CNET.

Apple News Plus subscribers will gain access to a new game called Quartiles, leaderboard sharing of game scores, and the ability to read news offline by downloading stories, puzzles, and audio articles. The Podcast widget will change color based on the cover art of the podcast playing, and recently listened to podcasts will appear in Spotlight Search suggestions. The Books app has a counter feature to track reading minutes per day and the ability to set reading goals ranging from one minute to 24 hours per day.

In addition to new features, iOS 17.5 includes security updates such as “Cross-Platform Tracking Detection” to detect unwanted third-party tracking devices and receive notifications when such devices are detected. The update also patches 15 security vulnerabilities that could have been exploited by hackers to gain access to personal data. Apple typically does not disclose security issues until patches are available, and this update addresses various vulnerabilities to protect user information.

Apple also released software updates for iPadOS, watchOS, and macOS for different operation systems. The company is set to debut iOS 18 in the coming weeks, which will utilize artificial intelligence technologies, such as large language models and iWork. However, iOS 18 will only be compatible with newer iPhones, excluding iPhone 8 Plus and older models, as well as some iPhone SE models, which will not receive future updates. This highlights the importance of upgrading to newer devices to take advantage of the latest software updates and features from Apple.

The new features and security updates in iOS 17.5 offer users enhanced protection against security breaches and malicious tracking incidents, such as those involving AirTags. By introducing features like “Repair State” mode and “Cross-Platform Tracking Detection,” Apple aims to provide a more secure and user-friendly experience for its customers. The update also includes improvements in Apple News, Podcasts, and the Books app to enhance the overall user experience and offer new functionalities that cater to different preferences and interests.

Overall, iOS 17.5 brings a mix of security enhancements, new features, and improvements to existing apps for Apple devices. The update not only addresses security vulnerabilities but also introduces new functionalities for Apple News Plus subscribers, podcast listeners, and book enthusiasts. With the upcoming release of iOS 18 and the exclusion of older iPhone models from future updates, Apple continues to innovate and prioritize user security and experience in its software updates.
