Gen Z Mocks Gen Alpha: ‘They’re Not Fully Developed’

Gen Z, once seen as the cutting-edge and trendsetting generation, is now turning their mockery towards the younger generation, Gen Alpha. Members of Gen Alpha, born between 2010 and 2024, are being criticized by Zoomers for their lack of social skills, with some attributing it to excessive screen time leading to a “blue light stare.” This new rivalry between the two generations is causing tension and debate on social media platforms.

The term “blue light stare” refers to the expressionless and unbothered look on the faces of Gen Alpha members, a result of being constantly exposed to screens emitting blue light from a young age. With many members of Gen Alpha spending a significant amount of time on screens during the Covid-19 pandemic, some Zoomers argue that they have missed out on crucial opportunities to develop strong interpersonal communication skills.

The rise of social media platforms like TikTok has amplified the feud between Gen Z and Gen Alpha, with viral videos showcasing encounters between the two generations gaining millions of views. Zoomers criticizing Gen Alpha’s communication skills and social behaviors are drawing attention to the potential negative impacts of excessive screen time on the younger generation’s abilities to engage in face-to-face interactions.

While some experts acknowledge the potential benefits of technology in fostering creativity and innovation within Gen Alpha, concerns about attention spans, critical thinking skills, and interpersonal interactions persist. The older generations, particularly Millennials, have noted the hypocritical nature of Gen Z’s criticisms, as they themselves are often glued to their smartphones. The ironic parallels between Gen Z’s frustrations with Gen Alpha and Millennials’ frustrations with Zoomers highlight the ever-evolving dynamics between different age groups.

The underlying reasons for Gen Z’s disdain towards Gen Alpha may stem from feelings of insecurity, competition, and jealousy. As Gen Alpha begins to influence cultural trends and marketing strategies, Zoomers may fear being overshadowed by the younger generation. Additionally, the economic challenges faced by Gen Z, such as rising inflation and college costs, may contribute to their negative perceptions of those younger than them, reflecting broader societal issues.

In conclusion, the intergenerational tensions between Gen Z and Gen Alpha shed light on the complexities of generational dynamics in a rapidly changing world. While criticisms and rivalries exist, it is essential to recognize the underlying societal issues that fuel these tensions and address them collaboratively. Understanding and empathy can help bridge the gaps between generations and foster a more harmonious coexistence in a world shaped by technology and social media.
