At the Fête de “L’Huma” (Humanité), the four parties of the New Popular Front competed in calls for maintaining “unity” on the left. The event took place in Brétigny-sur-Orge (Essonne) where a round table discussion was held in front of a small crowd. The four leaders of the New Popular Front delivered speeches emphasizing unity. Marine Tondelier from Les Ecologistes praised the event as a moment of unity and resistance, highlighting the NFP as their most valuable asset. She called for a unified candidacy in 2027, stating that while it may be challenging, it is necessary for those attempting to succeed without interference.
Fabien Roussel of the French Communist Party stressed the importance of unity to bring about change in France and improve people’s lives. He emphasized the need to preserve unity as a common good, acknowledging the different backgrounds and propositions of the four forces. Roussel advocated for respectful debates to convince more people and ensure unity until the end. Manuel Bompard of La France insoumise expressed the urgency to take immediate action against President Macron’s undemocratic actions following the legislative elections. He called for utilizing all available means, including censure, mobilization, and impeachment, to address Macron’s power grab.
Olivier Faure of the Socialist Party acknowledged that the NFP does not erase all differences but commended its success in preventing far-right extremism. He vowed to continue promoting a culture of unity within the NFP despite existing distinctions. Earlier in the day, there was a significant turnout and applause at the Picardie debout! booth for François Ruffin, a former member of the La France insoumise party. Ruffin has been openly criticizing Jean-Luc Mélenchon, another former member, in recent days. While Ruffin engaged in a debate on constitutional matters with Charlotte Girard, he did not address his strained relationship with Mélenchon during the event.
The discussions at the Fête de “L’Huma” highlighted the common goal of maintaining unity on the left among the four parties of the New Popular Front. While acknowledging differences in approach and ideology, the leaders emphasized the need to work together to effect positive change in France and protect democratic principles. The call for a unified candidacy in 2027 signifies a commitment to overcoming challenges and fostering collaboration despite potential obstacles. The event showcased a sense of solidarity and determination among the various political groups to confront current political issues and uphold the values of democracy.
