An APA study reveals potential regret in using common text abbreviations

Sending text abbreviations is a common practice, with popular abbreviations like “LOL” and “BRB” regularly exchanged in messages. However, a new study published by the American Psychological Association found that using abbreviations can make you seem insincere in text messages. The study, conducted with over 5,300 participants, concluded that spelling out words in texts rather than abbreviating them can make you appear more honest and increase the likelihood of receiving responses.

Lead researcher David Fang, a doctoral student at Stanford University, explained that while abbreviations may convey informality and closeness, they actually lead to negative perceptions of the sender. The study included experiments analyzing responses to texts with abbreviations in various scenarios, such as Discord group chats, dating interactions, and Tinder conversations. Participants who used abbreviations received shorter and fewer responses, suggesting that the use of abbreviations may hinder effective communication and social connections.

Despite the prevalence of text abbreviations in daily interactions, many people may not realize the consequences of using them. A preliminary survey conducted as part of the study revealed that 99% of respondents reported using abbreviations in texts, with 84% not considering that others might have a negative reaction to abbreviations. While younger generations tend to use more text abbreviations, the study found that they still prefer messages with full words, as abbreviated texts were perceived as less sincere and effortful.

While the study highlighted the negative impact of text abbreviations on perceived honesty and communication effectiveness, lead researcher Fang doesn’t suggest completely eliminating their use. He emphasized that tailoring the level of effort put into text conversations based on the significance of the relationship is important. However, for situations where sincerity and strong social ties are important, such as the beginning of a relationship or when making a good impression, spelling out words in texts may be more beneficial.

Some of the most popular texting abbreviations include “LOL” for laugh out loud, “BRB” for be right back, “OMG” for oh my God, “IDK” for I don’t know, and “FYI” for for your information. Other common abbreviations include “IMO” for in my opinion, “JK” for just kidding, “ASAP” for as soon as possible, “ILY” for I love you, and “ICYMI” for in case you missed it. While abbreviations can be convenient for quick and casual conversations, the study suggests that using full words in texts can help convey sincerity and strengthen social bonds in relationships where it is important.
