Watch out for these 6 warning signs that an online course may be a scam

Millions of Americans are investing in online courses to acquire new skills and stay competitive in the job market. However, with the average course costing $1,400, it is important to make informed choices to ensure getting the best value. Sabina Hitchen, CEO of Press for Success, warns that there is little regulation in the online education industry, making it easy for scammers to take advantage of unsuspecting consumers. She advises individuals to watch for warning signs before committing to an expensive online course.

One sign to watch out for is influencers posing as experts in the online education industry. Hitchen suggests doing background research on the teacher’s credentials and track record to ensure they are qualified to teach the course. Additionally, she advises avoiding courses that lack a clear structure or seem disorganized, as they may not offer real value to the student. Unrealistic promises, such as claims that students will achieve the same success as their influencers, should also be viewed with skepticism.

It is important to consider the level of access and support provided by an online course before enrolling. Given the cost of these classes, students should expect instructors to be available for assistance if needed. Hitchen also warns against nonexistent reviews or suspect testimonials, as some online courses may be scams disguised as legitimate offerings. It is crucial to look for authentic reviews and social proof before committing to a course.

Hitchen advises against people or programs that pressure individuals into signing up for courses, especially if they hear about financial limitations and still insist on enrollment. Students should also be wary of those who make them feel like their chance to learn is over if they do not spend a significant amount of money immediately. Instead, she recommends finding courses that offer free samples or teasers to get a feel for the content before making a financial commitment.

Despite the risks, Hitchen is a proponent of the online education industry and encourages everyone to expand their skills through online courses. She emphasizes the importance of conducting thorough research before enrolling in a course to ensure it meets the student’s needs and expectations. While there may be scams and faux professionals in the industry, there are also legitimate experts working to provide valuable and accessible education to help individuals improve their lives. By being cautious and informed, individuals can take advantage of the opportunities offered by online education to enhance their skills and career prospects.
