Gen Z voters are choosing humorous write-in candidates on their ballots and turning them into popular memes

As young voters participate in the 2024 election, many are engaging in a unique trend of writing in meme candidates on their ballots. This trend, fueled by Generation Z’s affinity for social media, has seen voters writing in names such as characters from popular shows or celebrities like Taylor Swift. The trend has sparked a backlash on social media, with critics calling it irresponsible and a waste of an important opportunity to vote in a crucial election. In some states, taking photos of completed ballots is not allowed, and voters who do so could face fines or penalties.

Amid the trend of joke write-ins, Gen Z voters are also engaging in other election day trends, such as vowing to cancel out loved ones’ votes by casting ballots for the opposite candidate. A recent survey showed that Vice President Kamala Harris holds a lead among Gen Z voters, with about half of young people polled supporting the Democratic candidate. In contrast, only one-third of young people showed support for former President Donald Trump in the survey. While Trump’s recent podcast interview with Joe Rogan garnered significant views, Harris has focused on leveraging platforms like TikTok to appeal to young voters.

Experts suggest that the surge in young voter registration following Harris’ announcement of her candidacy for president was in part due to the excitement generated on platforms like TikTok. This online buzz has played a significant role in engaging young voters and encouraging them to participate in the election. While some humor and levity may be present in the way young voters are engaging with the election, the importance of casting a meaningful vote in a crucial election should not be overlooked. Encouraging young voters to take their election participation seriously and use their vote to make a difference is essential.

The TikTok-savvy generation is taking a different approach to expressing their views and engaging with the political process by writing in meme candidates on their ballots. This trend has garnered attention and sparked debates on social media about the best way to participate in the election. While some criticize the trend as irresponsible and a waste of a vote, others see it as a unique way for young voters to express themselves and engage with the election process. As Gen Z continues to influence election day trends, it remains important to encourage them to take their civic duty seriously and make informed decisions when voting.

The debate about meme write-in candidates on ballots reflects the broader conversations surrounding the importance of participating in the election and making informed decisions. While humor and levity may play a role in how young voters engage with the political process, it is crucial to remind them of the significance of their vote. With the election between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump heating up, it is essential for young voters to educate themselves on the issues and candidates before casting their ballots. By taking their vote seriously and engaging in the election process, Gen Z can make a meaningful impact on the outcome of the election.
