What is known so far about the Listeria outbreak linked to deli counter-sliced meat

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is currently investigating a listeria outbreak that has been linked to meat sliced at deli counters. The outbreak has resulted in two deaths and at least 28 hospitalizations. Many of those affected reported consuming meats sliced at deli counters, specifically deli-sliced turkey, liverwurst, and ham. The CDC is advising the public, especially those at risk, to avoid meats sliced at deli counters or to thoroughly reheat the meat before consumption.

The symptoms of listeria infection can vary, with pregnant individuals experiencing fever and flu-like symptoms, while non-pregnant individuals may experience fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and seizures. Symptoms can begin within two weeks of consuming contaminated food, but can also appear as early as the consumption day or as late as 10 weeks after eating the food. Identifying whether a sick individual is part of the outbreak can take three to four weeks, so the actual number of people affected by the outbreak may be higher than reported.

The impacted states in the listeria outbreak include Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin. The CDC considers deli meats, hot dogs, soft cheeses from unpasteurized milk, unpasteurized dairy products, smoked fish, and premade deli salads to be at higher risk for listeria contamination. Newborns, pregnant individuals, those aged 65 or older, and people with weakened immune systems are considered to be at a higher risk for listeria infection.

As of now, no recalls have been issued in connection to the listeria outbreak. The CDC is continuing to investigate the source of the outbreak and advising the public on ways to reduce the risk of infection. The agency recommends avoiding meats sliced at deli counters or thoroughly reheating the meat before consumption. Pregnant individuals and those at higher risk for listeria infection should be especially cautious when consuming deli meats and other high-risk foods. Monitoring symptoms and seeking medical attention if symptoms of listeria infection appear is crucial in protecting one’s health.
