The power struggle attempted by the NFP during the summer proved to be particularly ineffective

The summer following the legislative elections in June and July has been marked by a game of deception which is now coming to an end with the imminent appointment of a new Prime Minister. The New Popular Front (NFP) has emerged as the loser, as their candidate, Lucie Castets, was rejected by Emmanuel Macron on August 26th. Despite protests from left-wing parties and calls for marches for democracy, the response to the decision has been minimal. The attempt by the united left to assert their power following the second round of elections has proved to be ineffective.

Emmanuel Macron was the biggest loser following the dissolution of the National Assembly on July 7th, as he struggled to manage the complexity of an uncertain parliament while facing backlash from his own party. The situation has not significantly improved for the President, but the united left has seen a decline in their position. The series of errors made by the left’s leaders highlights the weaknesses of their coalition. The failure to quickly agree on a candidate for Prime Minister and the disagreements over leadership have damaged the credibility of the NFP.

The NFP, after the success of the republican front against the National Rally, failed to maintain their electoral momentum by delaying the selection of a Prime Minister candidate. The conflicting strategies between Jean-Luc Mélenchon and Olivier Faure regarding the choice of candidate have caused further divisions within the coalition. Various names were proposed and dismissed, undermining the unity of the alliance. The inability to present a united front has weakened the NFP’s position and credibility.

The prolonged and courteous hearing at the Elysée, attended by representatives from various left-wing parties, resulted in the rejection of Lucie Castets as a candidate for Matignon. The justification given was that a government based solely on the program and parties proposed by the NFP would face immediate opposition from other parliamentary groups. Despite accusations of a denial of democracy and calls for protests, the left’s attempts to assert power have been ineffective. The political landscape remains divisive and unstable, with no clear winner emerging from the aftermath of the legislative elections.

The power struggle between the united left and Emmanuel Macron’s government has highlighted the challenges of forming a coalition and navigating the complexities of the French political system. The failure to establish a cohesive strategy and present a strong candidate for Prime Minister has left the NFP in a weakened position. As the process of forming a new government continues, the future of French politics remains uncertain, with shifting alliances and power dynamics shaping the post-election landscape.
