The Health Benefits of Tennis for Heart, Mind, and Longevity: Is It the Healthiest Sport?

Tennis has been proclaimed as “the world’s healthiest sport” at the US Open in New York this year, with the theme “Celebrating the power of tennis.” According to Dr. Brian Hainline, tennis is uniquely positioned to inspire healthier individuals as it provides mental, physical, and social health benefits. Studies and experts have found that playing tennis is indeed good for one’s health due to its intense nature and the variety of ways in which it challenges the body. Tennis players have been found to live almost 10 years longer than sedentary individuals, with a reduced risk of dying from heart disease and premature death.

One of the top benefits of playing tennis is that it provides a full-body workout, targeting muscles in the legs, core, shoulders, and arms. Tennis also boosts cardiovascular health by activating both fast-twitch and slow-twitch muscle fibers, providing a well-rounded exercise routine. Additionally, playing tennis can help improve bone density due to the impact from jumping up and down and regular play. The mental health benefits of tennis are also significant, as it requires intense focus, strategic thinking, and mental fortitude, leading to reduced stress, better cognitive function, and improved coping skills.

According to experts, tennis is considered one of the healthiest sports due to its numerous physical, mental, and social benefits. The switch in intensity levels during play, akin to high-intensity interval training, provides benefits for various mechanisms in the body. Furthermore, the social aspect of playing tennis with others, the exposure to sunlight, and the physical challenges of the sport all contribute to the overall health benefits. While singles tennis is more intense in terms of cardio workout compared to doubles, both formats offer significant health advantages.

When starting to play tennis, it is important to consult with a doctor, especially if you have been sedentary. Proper warm-up, stretching, and using the correct equipment are essential to prevent injuries, such as tendonitis, twisted ankles, and calf strains. Despite some common sports injuries, tennis is considered one of the safer sports overall due to its low injury rate. Pickleball, a similar sport to tennis, also offers health benefits but may not be as challenging or require the same aerobic intensity as tennis. Overall, tennis is a sport that provides a comprehensive workout for the body and mind, contributing to a healthier and longer life span for those who play regularly.
