The High Commissioner of the Republic confirms a “return to calm” in New Caledonia. The High Commissioner of the Republic, Louis Le Franc, stated in a press release on Tuesday that “the return to calm continues throughout the territory” of New Caledonia, confirming the “clear progress in restoring order” mentioned by Emmanuel Macron. To combat the violence that has shaken the archipelago since last Monday, resulting in six deaths including two gendarmes, additional security forces totaling nearly 600 personnel will be deployed in the coming hours.

The challenges faced by law enforcement, especially in the Greater Noumea area, are reflected in the decision to keep the international airport closed until Thursday. The reopening of the airport will be reassessed on Thursday, May 23, depending on the situation’s evolution. Several countries, including Australia and New Zealand, are requesting to evacuate their citizens as tensions remain high. Efforts to clear the main roads in Noumea are ongoing, with twenty-one major stores reopened and gradually restocked with supplies.

The heightened security measures have been implemented to restore peace in the region and prevent further violence. The influx of additional security forces will help reinforce law and order, providing a sense of security for the residents of New Caledonia. The closure of the international airport serves to control the flow of people and ensure that the situation is under control before reopening. The international community remains vigilant and ready to assist as necessary.

The High Commissioner emphasized the importance of calm and cooperation among all parties involved in resolving the crisis. The ongoing efforts to clear the roads and reopen stores demonstrate progress in returning to normalcy after the recent violent events. The situation in Noumea is gradually improving, with authorities working diligently to ensure the safety and well-being of the population. The support and assistance of the international community are crucial in managing the aftermath and preventing future conflicts.

In conclusion, the overall situation in New Caledonia is gradually stabilizing, with a significant increase in security forces and ongoing efforts to restore order. The closure of the international airport reflects the cautious approach to managing the crisis and ensuring the safety of all individuals in the region. As the community works together to overcome the challenges and rebuild, it is crucial to maintain a sense of calm and cooperation. By continuing to collaborate and address the root causes of the violence, New Caledonia can pave the way for a peaceful and prosperous future.
