Sanchez activates the renewal of the PSOE while Junts and ERC clarify their strategy in the legislature

The PSOE is entering a phase of renewal with the announcement of the 41st Federal Congress this fall. All decisions within the party were put on hold due to the early elections in Catalonia and negotiations to appoint Salvador Illa. Now, Pedro Sánchez is shifting focus from the Moncloa to Ferraz in order to strengthen the party internally and consolidate support around his leadership. The future of the legislature is uncertain as it hinges on the outcome of the internal processes of their Catalan partners, Junts and ERC, who are holding congresses in October and November.

Sánchez is prioritizing internal party matters at a time when passing the 2025 General State Budget in a timely manner is proving to be complex. The government has expressed its intention to present the budget to Congress soon, but if it fails to pass, there may be another extension without calling for early general elections. The leader of the PSOE aims to revitalize the party and achieve its goals to be prepared for the future. The upcoming regional elections in Andalusia by June 2026 are seen as crucial, with a need to strengthen the party in regions like Andalusia and Madrid to challenge the dominance of the PP.

Andalusia holds a key priority for the PSOE, with leaders focusing on the region following the European elections. Recent political developments have challenged the party, such as the financial agreement between the PSC and ERC, potentially giving the PP leverage to criticize the treatment of Andalusia by the Sánchez government. Vice President and PSOE Deputy Secretary General María Jesús Montero reappeared in Andalusia at a party event to provide support amidst this challenging time, as the leadership plan towards the 41st Congress is being discussed.

In the PSOE’s plans, Montero’s role in supporting Andalusia and providing clarity on the Catalonia issue is crucial, especially in response to internal dissent within the party towards the leadership in the region. The upcoming Congress will mark the beginning of a process of internal renewal for the party, as many territorial leaders have been in position for several years. The Congress in November will kickstart the party’s renewal process and pave the way for internal changes and consolidation of support for Pedro Sánchez’s leadership.

Following the turbulent period after the ERC agreement, the PSOE is gearing up for the 41st Congress with a focus on revitalizing the party internally. This Congress will mark the start of an extensive process of renewal within the party, with leaders from various territories having been in power for several years. The upcoming regional elections in Andalusia are seen as crucial for the party, with a need to strengthen key regions like Andalusia and Madrid to challenge the dominance of the PP. The PSOE is working towards consolidating support for Sánchez’s leadership and preparing for the future challenges that lie ahead.
