It’s just plane rude.
A common plane behavior that is often deemed annoying but harmless can actually end up upsetting the pilot.
Travelers are being warned not to clap when a flight lands as it can be considered “rude” and is improper etiquette.
“A round of applause. Two words. No and no,” Rosie Panter, a travel expert at Dealchecker, told the Express.
“If you have had a particularly rocky flight and difficult landing, maybe a slight clap, or thanks to the pilot as you leave, but no regular flight to the Med should result in clapping. Let’s leave that in the past.”
While clapping doesn’t happen on every flight, there’s always the handful of people that like to participate in the act — and it’s become more common in recent years.
But etiquette specialist Jo Bryant said that it’s actually disrespectful, no matter whether or not the landing was smooth.
“Applause is not necessary after a landing and is rude to the pilots,” Bryant told the Express.
“If the landing is good, clapping suggests surprise at such skill. If the landing is bad, applause would be insultingly sarcastic.”
Panter offered another etiquette tip for flyers: Don’t stand up the second the wheels touch the ground.
“We’ve all done it when in a hurry but standing as soon as the plane touches the tarmac will not speed up your exit time in the slightest,” she said. “The crew need time to safely prepare for disembarking and opening the doors.”
“And even then, those closest to the doors will get to leave first, so save yourself from looking like a melon and wait your turn.”
If you have a connecting flight to catch, Panter suggests informing the flight attendants during the flight and see if they can help arrange for you to get off the plane quicker.
The best way to ensure a quick departure is to book a seat closer to the front of the plane.
