Polish President calls for continued US support for security in Europe

As Poland commemorates Independence Day, President Andrzej Duda called for continued U.S. commitment to Europe’s security in the face of Russian aggression. Duda emphasized the importance of U.S. protection in light of a resurgent Russian imperialism, stating that Europe cannot ensure its own security. He also called for the restoration of Ukraine’s pre-2014 borders, following Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the full-scale invasion in 2022. Duda’s speech highlighted the need to strengthen Euro-Atlantic ties and respect the territorial integrity of all countries, particularly Ukraine.

The ongoing war in Ukraine looms large over Poland’s border, with concerns about the potential impact of Donald Trump’s return to the White House on the region’s security. While some fear that Trump may disrupt the U.S. commitment to NATO or strike a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin that could further destabilize the region, others hold out hope that Trump could help broker an end to the conflict. Duda’s friendly relations with Trump raise expectations for a meeting before the inauguration in January, with a focus on addressing the security challenges facing Europe and the world.

Independence Day in Poland holds significant historical resonance, marking the country’s restored sovereignty after years of being partitioned and ruled by Russia, Germany, and Austro-Hungary. The date of November 11 symbolizes a proud moment in Polish history, underscoring the nation’s resilience in the face of adversity. Tens of thousands of people in Warsaw participated in a march organized by nationalist groups, a tradition that has at times led to violent clashes in the past. Despite concerns about potential unrest, this year’s march proceeded without major incidents, with organizers estimating a turnout of 250,000 and city officials putting the number at 90,000.

The presence of Jaroslaw Kaczynski, leader of the Law and Justice party, at the march underscored the party’s efforts to make a comeback after governing Poland from 2015-2023. As the conservative party seeks to regain power, its members joined the march alongside Kaczynski, signaling their commitment to upholding Polish values and traditions. While tensions simmer over security concerns and regional stability, Poland’s Independence Day serves as a poignant reminder of the country’s enduring spirit and determination to defend its sovereignty. The call for U.S. support in safeguarding Europe’s security reflects the broader challenges facing the region in the face of Russian aggression and geopolitical uncertainties.
