Past and present teammates not surprised by Evan Rodrigues’ record-tying Stanley Cup start

Florida Panthers forward Evan Rodrigues has been a standout player in the Stanley Cup Final, outscoring top talents like Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and Zach Hyman with three goals in the first two games. Rodrigues, who went undrafted out of Boston University and is on his fourth team in five years, has tied a record for the most goals in NHL history through a player’s first two Cup Final games. His contributions have been crucial to the Panthers’ success in the series, as he scored a game-winning goal in Game 2 and snapped Edmonton’s penalty kill streak.

Rodrigues’ breakout performance in the Final comes after years of perseverance and hard work. He initially signed with the Buffalo Sabres out of college but found success with the Pittsburgh Penguins, where he scored a career-high 19 goals in the 2021-22 season. Despite not securing a long-term contract, he continued to excel with the Colorado Avalanche before joining the Panthers last summer. His consistency and versatility on the ice have made him a valuable asset to the team, leading to a four-year contract extension.

Throughout his career, Rodrigues had experienced playoff disappointments, including losses in Game 7 situations with both the Penguins and the Avalanche. However, his move to the Panthers has given him the opportunity to make a significant impact in the postseason. His former teammates and coaches have praised his intelligence, confidence, and ability to mesh well with top players on any team. Rodrigues’ performance in Game 2, where he played on different lines and contributed on both ends of the ice, showcased his versatility and value to the Panthers’ lineup.

Despite his individual success in the Final, Rodrigues remains focused on the team’s overall goal of winning the Stanley Cup. He emphasizes the importance of contributing to victories rather than personal statistics, reflecting a humble and team-oriented attitude. Coach Paul Maurice’s strategic lineup adjustments have allowed Rodrigues to thrive in various roles, demonstrating his adaptability and commitment to the team’s success. As the Panthers are now two wins away from potentially raising another Stanley Cup banner, Rodrigues is poised to continue making a significant impact on their journey to the championship.
