In a statement during a vote of confidence on the budget law in the Italian Senate, the Democratic Party leader Francesco Boccia criticized the government for undermining parliamentary democracy by allowing the Budget Law to bypass the normal legislative process. Boccia argued that without the Budget Law, parliamentary democracy no longer exists as the government can do as it pleases with the complicit silence of the majority forces in parliament.

Boccia also lamented that while the Parliament may still exist, its dignity has been compromised by the government’s actions. He emphasized the importance of defending the Parliament and the rights of citizens in the face of the government’s overreach. The opposition parties also expressed their concerns about the erosion of parliamentary democracy and the concentration of power in the hands of the government.

The Democratic Party leader’s comments were echoed by other opposition parties in Italy, who expressed solidarity in defending the principles of parliamentary democracy and the rights of citizens. The opposition parties highlighted the need for transparency, accountability, and respect for democratic norms in the legislative process, particularly when it comes to the budget law.

The debate in the Italian Senate highlighted growing concerns about the state of parliamentary democracy in Italy and the need to uphold the principles of checks and balances in the government. The opposition parties called for greater oversight and scrutiny over government actions to ensure that they are in line with democratic norms and the rule of law.

The Democratic Party leader’s remarks underscored the importance of parliamentary democracy as a cornerstone of the Italian political system. By criticizing the government for bypassing the legislative process with the Budget Law, Boccia and other opposition leaders emphasized the need to uphold the integrity of Parliament and ensure that it remains a key institution in protecting the rights and interests of citizens.

Overall, the debate in the Italian Senate reflected a broader concern about the erosion of parliamentary democracy and the need to hold the government accountable for its actions. The opposition parties pledged to continue defending the principles of democracy and the rule of law, even in the face of attempts to undermine them. The comments made by the Democratic Party leader and other opposition leaders underscore the ongoing struggle to uphold democratic values and protect the rights of citizens in Italy.
