Zabih Yaqubee, a 25-year-old Afghan, had the opportunity to experience a unique adventure aboard the Belem, a historic three-masted ship, as part of a program to escort the Olympic flame from Athens to Marseille. Along with fifteen other scouts, aged 17 to 25, Zabih embarked on this journey filled with new experiences and challenges. Despite the excitement of seeing dolphins play alongside the ship and passing through the Corinth Canal, the daily routine on board was physically demanding, with tasks ranging from cleaning the deck to assisting with meals and participating in night watches and physical maneuvers under the strict command of Captain Aymeric Gibet.
The Belem, with its 1,200 square meters of sail and 800 tons, required effort and dedication from the crew to navigate through the waters. The journey included unforgettable moments, such as passing through the Corinth Canal, specially opened for the ship, and witnessing the sunrise over the calm blue sea near the Strait of Messina. Zabih found solace in the routine and challenges of the voyage, feeling energized by the pace and the endless horizon that cleared his mind of negative thoughts. Despite being aware of the differences in experiences between himself and the other young participants, Zabih cherished the happiness of being part of this unique journey.
During an emotional moment observing dolphins playing near the ship, Zabih reflected on his past struggles and the contrast with his current journey across the Mediterranean. Despite the physical challenges and demanding tasks on board, he found strength and inspiration in the sense of accomplishment and the opportunity to be part of such an extraordinary adventure.
