Next Prime Minister: Daughter of Tycoon Thaksin Garners Support from Thai Alliance

Pheu Thai’s surprise decision to nominate Thaksin Shinawatra’s youngest daughter, Paetongtarn, as their candidate for Prime Minister has caught many political analysts off guard. Thaksin, the party’s founder and figurehead, was expected to delay his political dynasty and shield his daughter from Thailand’s cutthroat politics for a little longer. This move comes amidst ongoing political turmoil in Thailand, with Pheu Thai and its predecessors facing challenges including coups and a long-standing grudge match as Thaksin tried to disrupt established patronage networks.

The uncertainty surrounding the political landscape in Thailand could further strain the already underperforming economy, as stimulus measures introduced by Srettha, the current Prime Minister, may now be in question. One of his key plans was to provide 10,000 baht handouts to 50 million people, aimed at reviving the economy. With the nomination of Paetongtarn as a candidate, there are concerns about how she will navigate the political challenges ahead, including assumptions that she will be controlled by Thaksin, despite his claims of retiring from politics.

The 11-party alliance that supports Pheu Thai is crucial for Paetongtarn’s success, as they hold a significant majority in parliament with 314 out of 493 seats. To become Prime Minister, she will need the approval of more than half of the house. If elected, Paetongtarn will face multiple challenges, including the perception that she will be a puppet of Thaksin, whose attempts to distance himself from politics have not been convincing to many observers. This nomination marks a bold move by Pheu Thai, as they aim to navigate the volatile political landscape in Thailand.

Despite the challenges ahead, Pheu Thai’s nomination of Paetongtarn reflects their determination to maintain their presence in Thai politics and potentially challenge the current establishment. The party has faced adversity in the past, with two Shinawatra governments ousted in coups, showcasing the ongoing power struggle with established elites. Paetongtarn’s nomination signals a continuation of this power struggle, as she is set to become the first female Prime Minister of Thailand if successful, potentially marking a shift in the political landscape.

The surprise gamble taken by Pheu Thai in nominating Paetongtarn as their candidate for Prime Minister underscores their willingness to break from tradition and challenge the existing political order in Thailand. The move has stirred debate among political analysts, who are keenly watching to see how this unexpected development will play out in the coming months. As Thailand continues to navigate through political uncertainty and economic challenges, Paetongtarn’s leadership will be under intense scrutiny, with expectations high for her to navigate the complex political landscape and lead the country effectively.
