New supplement company using ancient Himalayan crop to enhance immune system

Big Bold Health is a dietary supplement company founded by Jeffrey Bland, who hopes to build the business into a multi-million dollar company within the next few years. The company recently raised $3 million and shared results from a study on its flagship product, a supplement derived from Himalayan Tartary buckwheat. Despite questions about the supplement industry, Big Bold is gaining traction and seeking scientific evidence to back its health claims. The company has been endorsed by health expert Mark Hyman and received funding from S2G Ventures.

Bland, a biochemist turned entrepreneur, founded Big Bold Health to understand the origins of chronic disease. The company is headquartered on Bainbridge Island, WA, and offers a range of products, with its star offering being the Himalayan Tartary Buckwheat line. This plant is rich in polyphenols, which can boost health, although there is no recommended dose for them. Big Bold acquired a farm in New York to become the sole producer of Himalayan Tartary buckwheat flour in the U.S.

The use of supplements is common in the U.S., with roughly three out of four Americans taking them. While supplements can help fill nutritional gaps for people with specific conditions, experts caution against overemphasizing their impact. Big Bold’s products, such as HTB rejuvenate, are priced at $82 and have been derived from previous studies on probiotics and fish oil. The company is seeking more evidence, such as funding a clinical study on the effects of Himalayan Tartary buckwheat supplements.

Big Bold’s recent study on the impact of its supplement on gene expression related to immune function and longevity has faced some criticism. Critics note limitations in the study, such as the small number of participants and lack of important neutrality controls. While the results are considered interesting, experts caution against drawing definitive conclusions from a single study. Big Bold plans to further research the impact of different growing strategies on the nutrient levels in buckwheat.

Despite the lack of clarity surrounding the health benefits of the supplements, Big Bold reports having thousands of customers and has attracted influencer support. The company defends its pricing as being reflective of the high quality ingredients used in its products. The company is continuing to study and research the benefits of its supplements, with a focus on understanding how different growing strategies impact nutrient levels in Himalayan Tartary buckwheat. While there is still uncertainty about the exact benefits of the products, Big Bold remains optimistic about the potential health advantages they may offer.
