Microsoft adjusts new Copilot sidebar for Edge following user complaints

Microsoft’s Copilot sidebar for the Edge browser was a powerful tool demonstrating the potential of artificial intelligence. However, a recent revamp of the sidebar has left many users disappointed as it seems to have lost functionality and quality of responses. The changes include user interface modifications and a loss of favorite features, prompting users to wonder why Microsoft tried to fix something that wasn’t broken. The new version of Copilot doesn’t feel connected or tuned-in to the user’s context as the old one did.

The original version of the Copilot sidebar was context-aware, offering targeted assistance based on the content in the main browser window. For example, it provided options like generating video highlights on a YouTube video or creating a page summary for a news story. However, the new version seems to be guessing at what users may want, leading to a distracted and unproductive experience. There is a disconnect in Microsoft’s approach between a general consumer chatbot and the specific and focused value of an AI tool like the browser sidebar.

Microsoft is listening to user complaints and making updates to address the feedback on the revamped Copilot sidebar for Edge. Changes include restoring access to users’ chat history, analyzing local PDFs, enhancing connectivity, improving chat responses, and expanding the tool’s capabilities. However, some usability issues still remain, such as the number of clicks required to start a new chat and missing features from the old version of the sidebar. Microsoft is making updates quickly, but users are waiting to see if the changes will bring back the functionality and relevance of the original Copilot sidebar.

The changes to the Copilot sidebar can be traced to a changing leadership within Microsoft, with Mustafa Suleyman leading the revamp under the company’s AI initiatives. Microsoft continues to iterate and improve the Copilot experience based on customer feedback, aiming to make it consistent across all endpoints. While the new update brings back some features from the old version, there is still work to be done in terms of usability and the overall user experience. Microsoft recognizes the value of user habits and loyalty and aims to build on that momentum in future updates to Copilot.

Overall, the experience with the new Copilot sidebar raises questions about the value of AI in our everyday lives. While AI providers should continue to experiment and innovate, they also need to acknowledge and enhance user habits and loyalty to create a seamless and productive experience. Microsoft’s journey with Copilot showcases the delicate balance between innovation and user satisfaction in the realm of artificial intelligence tools and applications. By listening to user feedback and making continuous improvements, Microsoft hopes to deliver a more connected and context-aware AI companion in the Copilot sidebar for the Edge browser.
