Michel Barnier calls for “keeping the Olympic spirit” that has allowed unity “beyond political divides”

At the Fête de “L’Huma,” the four parties of the Nouveau Front populaire are competing to call for the maintenance of “unity” on the left. This event took place on Saturday, at the Fête de L’Humanité in Brétigny-sur-Orge (Essonne), where a round table discussion gathered the four leaders of the NFP in front of a small audience. The leaders delivered speeches emphasizing the importance of unity on the left. Marine Tondelier of the Ecologists praised the event as a moment of unity and resistance, describing the NFP as their most valuable asset. She called for a unified candidacy in 2027 and urged those who doubt its feasibility to allow those who are trying to make it happen.

Fabien Roussel of the French Communist Party echoed the call for unity, emphasizing the need to continue working together to bring about change in France and improve people’s lives. He stressed the importance of preserving unity as a common good, despite the differences between the four parties. He encouraged constructive debate and dialogue to convince more people, promising to do everything possible to maintain unity until the end. Manuel Bompard of La France insoumise, while also advocating for unity, emphasized the need for immediate action in response to President Macron’s disregard for the results of the legislative elections. He called for the use of all available means, including censorship, mobilization, and impeachment.

Olivier Faure of the Socialist Party acknowledged that while the NFP does not erase all differences, it has successfully united to counter the extreme right. He expressed his commitment to continuing the culture of unity within the NFP. Earlier in the day, there was a large turnout and applause at the Picardie debout! stand to welcome François Ruffin, a former “insoumis” who has been critical of Jean-Luc Mélenchon in recent days. Ruffin engaged in a debate on constitutional issues with Charlotte Girard, another former “insoumise,” but did not address his tense relationship with Mélenchon.

Overall, the messages from the leaders of the NFP at the Fête de “L’Huma” emphasized the importance of unity on the left and the need to work together to bring about positive change in France. The discussions focused on the challenges of maintaining unity in the face of political differences and the necessity of finding common ground to advance shared goals. The event also featured debates and discussions on constitutional issues, reflecting the diverse interests and concerns within the left-wing political spectrum. Despite tensions within the NFP and the broader left-wing movement, there was a shared commitment to continue advocating for unity and addressing key issues facing French society.
