Singapore Airlines flight SQ321 experienced severe turbulence over the Indian Ocean, resulting in one passenger’s death and dozens of injuries. A relief plane transported the majority of passengers to Singapore, with some remaining in Bangkok for hospitalization. The airline’s CEO expressed regret for the traumatic experience and assured full cooperation in investigations.

The deceased passenger was identified as a 73-year-old British man, possibly experiencing a heart attack during the turbulence. His wife, also on the flight, was hospitalized in Bangkok. The man, Geoff Kitchen, was known for his involvement in the amateur theater community, described as a gentleman with integrity. Passengers arriving in Singapore were emotional, greeted by their families but avoiding media interactions.

British and Malaysian embassy officials visited hospitals in Bangkok to check on the injured passengers, with several receiving treatment for physical and internal injuries. Passengers recounted the harrowing experience of the sudden descent, with crew members sustaining injuries. The Boeing 777-300ER sharply descended during the turbulence, causing significant injuries to passengers and crew.

Clear air turbulence, not associated with storms, poses a significant risk during flights, with powerful wind currents creating dangerous conditions. Turbulence accounted for a significant portion of airline accidents between 2009 and 2018, highlighting the potential dangers faced by passengers. Boeing extended condolences to the affected families and expressed readiness to support Singapore Airlines in the aftermath of the incident.

The Boeing 777-300ER is a popular aircraft for long-haul flights, known for its capacity and efficiency in the aviation industry. Singapore Airlines operates a fleet of these planes and is majority-owned by the Singapore government investment conglomerate Temasek. The nationalities of the passengers included individuals from various countries, underscoring the global impact of the turbulence incident on this diverse group of travelers.
