Logo crossed out by Camara, absent player… Ligue 1’s fight against homophobia day still struggling to gain consensus

The match between Monaco and Nantes on May 19, 2024, saw Monaco player Mohamed Camara covering the logo of the Professional Football League against homophobia on his jersey. The League had planned an awareness campaign on the World Day against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia, but there were some disruptions despite more compliance from players this time. Mohamed Camara covered the symbols on his jersey, leading to controversy.

The Professional Football League had faced controversies in previous editions and decided to change the format by removing the rainbow jersey. The new campaign highlighted two patches on the jerseys and displayed LGBT+ colors on corner flags and LED boards. Despite efforts to change perceptions and promote inclusivity, some organizations like SOS Homophobie and PanamBoyz & Girlz distanced themselves from the initiative. Some players had boycotted the event in previous years for not wearing the rainbow jersey.

Mohamed Camara, who covered the league’s symbols on his jersey, sparked controversy during the match. Monaco’s head coach stated that the club supported the league’s operation, but Camara’s actions were his own initiative. Camara could face internal discussions and potential sanctions from the club. Off the field, former player Jimmy Briand was criticized for his comments on the absence of Mostafa Mohamed from the match. Homophobic discrimination can lead to imprisonment and fines in France, but the League had not planned any sanctions against Camara and Mohamed.

The Minister of Sports, Amélie Oudéa-Castera, strongly condemned the behavior of Camara and called for strict sanctions against both the player and the club. The controversy surrounding the league’s campaign against homophobia highlights the challenges faced in promoting inclusivity and respect in football. While the League’s efforts to raise awareness have seen some progress, there is still work to be done in addressing discrimination and intolerance in the sport. The incident involving players like Mohamed Camara serves as a reminder of the importance of education and dialogue in promoting a more inclusive environment in football.
