LFI maintains that the removal of Emmanuel Macron “is a credible possibility,” against the rest of the left’s opinion

The coordinator of La France insoumise (LFI), Manuel Bompard, addressed the press on July 9, 2024. He stated that the threat of impeaching Emmanuel Macron, raised by LFI, is a credible possibility, despite being rejected by the rest of the left. LFI maintains its ultimatum, demanding the nomination of Lucie Castets as Prime Minister. If this is not done, they will use constitutional means to overthrow Macron, such as the impeachment procedure outlined in the Constitution. Bompard emphasized that LFI has the support of one tenth of the deputies in the National Assembly, making their threat credible.

Bompard described the ultimatum as a warning against Macron’s autocratic tendencies, while his colleague Aurélie Trouvé characterized it as a solemn warning. Another member of LFI, Alma Dufour, defended the use of pressure to “shake things up.” LFI is standing by their actions leading up to the meeting of New Popular Front leaders at the Elysée with Lucie Castets. The meeting will also include the first secretary of the Socialist Party, Olivier Faure, who distanced himself from the idea, stating that it only represents LFI. Other left-wing parties, such as the Greens, have not offered support for the impeachment proposal, criticizing the lack of unity among the left.

The initiative by LFI to impeach Macron has sparked debate within the political landscape. Some question the timing and effectiveness of the move, while others see it as a necessary step to address what they perceive as a drift towards autocracy by the President. The meeting at the Elysée will be a crucial moment in determining the next steps for the left-wing movements in France. The polyphony within the New Popular Front should not lead to cacophony, according to Marine Tondelier of the Greens, highlighting the importance of unity in opposition to Macron’s government.

Overall, the threat of impeachment made by LFI against Macron is seen as a credible possibility, given their support within the National Assembly. The ultimatum serves as a warning to the President to nominate Lucie Castets as Prime Minister, or face the consequences of impeachment. The differing opinions within the left highlight the challenges of forming a unified opposition against Macron’s government. The upcoming meeting at the Elysée will be instrumental in determining the future direction of the left-wing movements in France. The polyphony within the New Popular Front must be managed to avoid disunity and discord in their efforts to challenge Macron’s leadership.
