Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will pass the torch to Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on May 15, making Wong the country’s fourth prime minister since independence in 1965. Lee announced in November that Wong would take over leadership of the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) before the next general election in November 2025. Wong, who has unanimous support from PAP members, will be sworn in at 8 p.m. local time that day.

Lee praised Wong and the rest of the “Fourth-Generation” leaders for their efforts to gain the people’s trust, particularly throughout the pandemic. Wong, age 51, first entered politics in 2011 and has held various ministerial positions, including Minister of Finance since 2021. He also serves as Chairman of the Monetary Authority of Singapore, the country’s central bank and financial regulator. Wong gained recognition for his role in the government’s Covid-19 response as one of the co-chairs of the Covid task force.

Wong’s experience in various ministries before becoming prime minister, including Defence, Communications and Information, Culture, Community, and Youth, National Development, and Education, has prepared him for this leadership role. Prior to his political career, Wong held roles such as chief executive of the Energy Market Authority and principal private secretary to Lee. His extensive experience and leadership during the pandemic have established him as a capable successor to Prime Minister Lee.

Lee emphasized the significance of a leadership transition for any country and expressed confidence in Wong and the Fourth-Generation team. Under Wong’s leadership, Singapore has engaged in the “Forward Singapore” initiative to create a more inclusive and resilient society and address the challenges facing the nation. The transition to Wong signals a new chapter for Singapore as it navigates evolving economic, social, and political landscapes.

Wong’s appointment as prime minister represents a continuation of the PAP’s leadership and the party’s commitment to serving the people of Singapore. The unwavering support from PAP members underscores Wong’s qualifications and capabilities to lead the country effectively, build on past achievements, and address future challenges. As Singapore prepares for the upcoming general election in 2025, Wong will lead the party in shaping policies and initiatives that reflect the aspirations and priorities of Singaporeans in the coming years.

The leadership transition from Lee to Wong marks a milestone in Singapore’s political history and signals continuity and stability amidst changing global dynamics. Wong’s tenure as prime minister will be closely watched as he steers the country through complex issues, such as economic recovery, social cohesion, and technological advancements. With his experience and commitment to serving the people, Wong is poised to lead Singapore into a new era of development and progress as he takes on the responsibilities of the highest office in the nation.
