Karim Rissouli, a journalist on France 5 who hosts the show “C ce soir”, revealed on Instagram the contents of a racist and anonymous letter he received at his home on June 25th. The letter contained derogatory comments about his ethnicity and suggested that the French people were fed up with individuals like him. Rissouli, who also highlighted that he regularly receives insults and death threats on social media, emphasized that the issue goes beyond his personal experience. He expressed concern for all marginalized groups who face discrimination and fear that racist sentiments may become normalized.

In the current volatile political climate, Rissouli underlined the importance of recognizing that racism is not an opinion but a crime. He warned of the potentially severe consequences of inflammatory language in public discourse. Rissouli’s call for collective remembrance of the gravity of racist remarks reflects a broader concern for the safety and well-being of marginalized communities who are vulnerable to discrimination. His message underscores the need for society to confront and address systemic racism in all its forms.

Various political figures and journalist organizations have come out in support of Rissouli, as well as other journalists who have also been targeted with racist attacks. The Society of Journalists of Le Monde expressed solidarity with Rissouli, Mohamed Bouhafsi, and Nassira El Moaddem, all of whom have faced racist insults. The Society of Journalists of Mediapart also voiced support for Rissouli, condemning the despicable nature of the hateful comments directed at him.

Amidst the growing frequency of racist incidents, political figures and media personalities have also spoken out against this troubling trend. Manon Aubry, a European Parliament member from LFI, denounced the resurgence of racist rhetoric and stood in solidarity with the victims of such hateful speech. Marine Tondelier of the Ecologists expressed concern over the normalization of racist discourse following the announcement of the dissolution of a political party. The Licra warned of the potential dark consequences of allowing racist sentiments to thrive and gain traction in society.

The case of Karim Rissouli serves as a stark reminder of the persistent presence of racism in society and the dangers it poses to marginalized individuals. By shedding light on the racist attacks he and others have experienced, Rissouli draws attention to the urgent need for action to combat discrimination and hate speech. The outpouring of support from fellow journalists and public figures underscores the solidarity needed to confront and address systemic issues of racism and bigotry. Rissouli’s courage in speaking out serves as an inspiration for others to stand up against racism in all its forms.
