Jordan Bardella gradually breaks free from Le Pen’s control, firmly holding onto the RN

The president of the National Rally, Jordan Bardella, held a meeting in Tonneins (Lot-et-Garonne) on November 10, 2024. Marine Le Pen no longer even pretends to compete with her heir in terms of popularity. She joked that it always seems to be “Jordan’s moment”. Despite facing a potential trial that could lead to her being barred from running for office, she attended the launch event of Bardella’s book surrounded by fellow RN deputies and notable figures from Canal+ and Vincent Bolloré, the conservative billionaire who owns the publisher Fayard. Le Pen repeats that Bardella’s popularity would support her fourth presidential bid, but recent events are putting their hierarchy to the test more than ever.

Despite Le Pen and Bardella publicly emphasizing their mutual loyalty and stated political plans for the future, doubts linger about their true intentions and possible ambitions. Le Pen dismisses any concerns with a sardonic remark, while Bardella has become more serious in his responses, indicating that circumstances may dictate a shift in leadership within the party. Some speculate that Bardella may aspire for higher office sooner than the premiership, especially as there are those who believe the name “Le Pen” may prevent success in a presidential bid. This uncertainty adds a layer of complexity to the dynamic between the two leaders.

Maintaining the facade of unity and hierarchy within the party becomes more challenging as Bardella’s popularity continues to grow, potentially overshadowing Le Pen’s leadership. Bardella tactfully avoids contradicting a journalist’s suggestion that the “Le Pen” name may hinder presidential aspirations, leaving room for interpretation. The delicate balance of power between the two figures is constantly under scrutiny, with Le Pen tacitly acknowledging the possibility of a conviction in the ongoing case involving European parliamentary assistants. Her advisor, Philippe Olivier, reveals that they are preparing for all scenarios, including the notion of Bardella launching a premature presidential bid.

The potential for Bardella to outshine Le Pen and rise to greater political prominence is a source of intrigue and speculation within the National Rally. While Le Pen asserts her position as the natural candidate for the party, the unpredictability of political life and the legal challenges she faces add an element of uncertainty to her future plans. Bardella’s increasing influence and public presence may complicate the carefully crafted narrative of succession within the party. As the political landscape shifts and internal dynamics evolve, the delicate balance between loyalty and ambition within the National Rally faces new challenges and uncertainties.
