The U.K.’s renewable energy industry received a significant boost as Japan’s largest power company, JERA, chose London as the location for its global renewables business headquarters. JERA launched JERA Nex, a new dedicated global renewable energy business focusing on developing, investing in, owning, and operating offshore and onshore wind, solar, and battery storage assets. With the U.K. being a leading player in offshore wind and renewables development, JERA Nex aims to leverage the country’s expertise in financing and developing projects to expand its pipeline globally.
JERA Nex’s goal is to develop 20GW of renewable capacity by 2035 and will consider selective acquisition opportunities and partnerships to build a robust pipeline for the future. The company plans to target high-quality projects and apply strict investment criteria in pursuit of its ambition. By scaling up its renewable energy efforts through JERA Nex, JERA hopes to meet its group-wide commitment to decarbonization, announced as “JERA Zero CO2 Emissions 2050” back in 2020. The majority of JERA’s operational assets and development pipeline will be transferred to JERA Nex to establish a center of excellence in renewables.
Yukio Kani, the Global CEO and Chair of JERA, highlighted the importance of JERA Nex in achieving the company’s vision of reaching zero emissions by 2050. The launch of JERA Nex will enable JERA to collaborate with experts worldwide to develop renewable projects, forge partnerships, and build assets that contribute to a decarbonized energy future characterized by sustainability, affordability, and stability. Nathalie Oosterlinck, the current Head of Global Renewables at JERA, will serve as the CEO of JERA Nex, leading a team of more than 300 global renewable and energy industry experts.
