Israel declares successful dismantling of top Hamas Rafah brigade on Philadelphi Corridor, resulting in elimination of 2,000 terrorists

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced that they had successfully “dismantled” Hamas’ Rafah brigade on the Philadelphi Corridor in an effort to eliminate cross-border tunnels into Egypt. Through precise and targeted operations over several months, the IDF claimed to have eliminated over 2,000 terrorists and destroyed approximately 8 miles of underground routes. This action has proven effective in neutralizing around 80% of all Hamas tunnels on this strategic security corridor.

The Rafah brigade was seen as one of Hamas’ last remaining strongholds and the Israeli forces are continuing to conduct operations in the Tel al-Sultan area, where tunnels are still being discovered and destroyed. The Tel al-Sultan Battalion commander, Mahmoud Hamdan, was killed alongside 250 other Hamas terrorists during one such operation. The Philadelphi Corridor has become a crucial point of contention as the United States, with the assistance of Qatar and Egypt, attempts to establish a cease-fire agreement between Israel and Hamas.

Despite ongoing negotiations, Hamas has indicated that it will not agree to a cease-fire as long as Israeli forces remain in the security corridor in Gaza. Israeli officials have refused to vacate the corridor due to security concerns stemming from existing Hamas threats in Gaza and potential dangers from the Sinai Peninsula. Ensuring the release of all hostages held by Hamas is also a top priority for Israel, as there are fears that these hostages could be smuggled out of Gaza through the Sinai Peninsula and into Iranian hands.

Brig. Gen. Itzik Cohen, commander of the 162nd Division, revealed that his troops had discovered 203 interconnected tunnels in the Philadelphi Corridor, with nine crossing over into Egypt. However, all nine of these tunnels had already been made inoperable by either Egyptian or Hamas forces before they were found by the IDF. The remaining tunnels are currently under investigation and will be neutralized once all inspections are complete.

Overall, the IDF’s efforts to dismantle Hamas’ Rafah brigade and eliminate cross-border tunnels into Egypt have caused a significant disruption to Hamas’ operations in Gaza. Despite the ongoing conflict and negotiations, both sides remain steadfast in their positions regarding the Philadelphi Corridor and the broader security concerns in the region. The situation remains tense as both Israel and Hamas navigate the complex political and military challenges in pursuit of their respective goals.
