In Tourcoing, Gérald Darmanin warns Michel Barnier against any tax increase and launches his movement

Gérald Darmanin held a political event in Tourcoing on September 29, 2024, where he maintained pressure on Prime Minister Michel Barnier. The deputy from the North warned Barnier against any increase in taxation just two days before the general policy statement. Darmanin, a member of the Renaissance party, stated that many would not support a government that raises taxes. Despite expressing support for the new government, he hinted that he would not vote for the budget if new taxes were imposed, particularly on wealthy individuals or businesses. Darmanin proposed instead new tax cuts for businesses to stimulate job creation, as high taxes on production are hurting the industry.

These statements follow weeks of tension between members of the ensemble for the Republic (EPR) group, including Darmanin, and Prime Minister Michel Barnier over tax issues. The topic has been a point of contention since Barnier’s appointment to Matignon, with the presidential camp pressuring him on his fiscal policies. The “Solféri-no” group, a faction of the EPR comprised of right-wing members, also voiced opposition to tax hikes in a published tribune. Darmanin received support from former Prime Minister Edouard Philippe, who highlighted their previous efforts to lower taxes and reduce the deficit while in government. Philippe’s presence at the event was seen as a message to Barnier regarding fiscal policy.

The event in Tourcoing was also an opportunity for the party to showcase unity. Gabriel Attal, another prominent member, engaged in a traditional Northern game called bourle with Darmanin for the cameras. Despite this, Philippe did not speak publicly and left before the political speeches, including one by Elisabeth Borne, who is vying with him for leadership of the Renaissance party. The gathering highlighted the internal dynamics within the party and the various factions at play in shaping its future direction.

Darmanin’s stance on taxation, emphasizing the need for tax cuts for businesses and job creation, signals a larger debate within the government regarding economic policies. His statements about not supporting a budget with new taxes have implications for the government’s fiscal plans and could impact the broader political landscape. The event in Tourcoing served as a platform for various party members to express their views and positions, showcasing the differing perspectives within the Renaissance party. The interplay between different factions within the party, as well as the support from influential figures like Edouard Philippe, underscores the complexity of the political landscape in France.
