Gran Canaria receives the largest cayuco in its history, with 231 people, including 58 minors

The island of Gran Canaria has received the largest cayuco in its history, with 231 Sub-Saharan migrants arriving on the island, including 58 minors and 13 women. Three of the individuals required hospitalization, although none were in serious condition. This is the largest cayuco to arrive in Gran Canaria so far, although there have been boats with more occupants in El Hierro in the past year. One boat even had 330 people on board. The cayuco was spotted by another vessel near the Anfi de Mar tourist complex, close to the port of Arguineguín. Despite the size of the cayuco and the good weather conditions, the number of migrants reaching the Canary Islands has decreased in recent weeks.

In the first 15 days of October, a total of 2,070 migrants arrived in the Canary Islands, which is a 75.8% decrease compared to the same period in 2023. From January to October 15th, 32,878 people arrived in the Canary Islands by sea, a 39.7% increase from the previous year. The flow of migrants has slowed down, especially after reaching 30,808 arrivals by September 30th, which was a 105% increase compared to the previous year. In Spain as a whole, a total of 45,122 migrants have arrived irregularly so far this year, a 22.6% increase from the same period in 2023.

A total of 231 Sub-Saharan migrants arrived in Gran Canaria, including 58 minors and 13 women, making it the largest cayuco to reach the island. Despite the good weather conditions and the large size of the cayuco, the number of migrants reaching the Canary Islands has decreased in recent weeks. This particular boat managed to reach the island on its own, despite being spotted by another vessel near the Anfi de Mar tourist complex. Due to the decrease in arrivals, the total number of migrants reaching Spain irregularly has also shown a slower increase compared to the previous year.

The decrease in the number of arrivals to the Canary Islands is notable, especially with only one cayuco managing to reach the coast in the past weekend. While Gran Canaria received the largest cayuco in its history, the overall flow of migrants to the Canary Islands has decreased. This contrasts with the trends seen earlier in the year, where the number of arrivals showed a significant increase. Despite the challenges faced by migrants on their journey, the authorities continue to manage the arrivals and provide assistance to those in need.
