Arnaud Danjean, a former member of the European Parliament from the right-wing party Les Républicains (LR), has been appointed as the special advisor to the new Prime Minister Michel Barnier. Despite not being close personally, Danjean has worked with Barnier before in 2005 when Barnier was heading the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Danjean, known for his expertise in defense issues, has been tasked by Barnier to provide political and personal assessments on various topics, with a focus on defense and security matters. He is also expected to handle European diplomacy for Barnier, who is a former Brexit negotiator.

After spending fifteen years in the European Parliament where he developed friendships with politicians such as François-Xavier Bellamy and Raphaël Glucksmann, Danjean had initially announced his intention to retire from politics. However, he was persuaded by the Prime Minister to take on the role of special advisor, despite initially refusing the offer of becoming Minister of Defense. Danjean eventually accepted the position out of loyalty and a sense of duty to serve the country in challenging times. His provincial background is seen as an asset by Barnier, enabling him to have a perspective beyond the Parisian political scene.

Danjean’s relationship with President Emmanuel Macron has been strained since he declined the offer to become Minister of Defense in 2017. He has been critical of Macron’s handling of international relations, particularly with regards to Vladimir Putin. Danjean believes that Macron’s approach lacks subtlety and nuance, and has expressed reservations about the President’s strategy in dealing with foreign leaders. Despite his disagreement with Macron, Danjean remains committed to serving the country’s interests and providing valuable insights to the Prime Minister on various issues.

Danjean’s experience in European affairs and defense policies, as well as his extensive network in Europe, make him a valuable asset to Barnier’s cabinet. His role as a special advisor involves providing input on key appointments in the security and defense sector, as well as shaping the government’s European diplomacy strategy. Danjean’s decision to accept the advisory role reflects his dedication to public service and his belief in the importance of contributing to the country’s governance in times of uncertainty and challenges.

Overall, Danjean’s appointment as special advisor to Prime Minister Barnier underscores the importance of having individuals with diverse expertise in key advisory roles within the government. His background in European affairs and defense policy, as well as his familiarity with political dynamics at both the national and international levels, position him as a valuable asset in shaping government policies. Danjean’s decision to take on the role out of loyalty and a sense of duty highlights his commitment to serving the country’s interests and contributing to the effective governance of France.
