FDA Upgrades Recall Status of Millions of Eggs to Most Serious Category, Prompting Disposal

Officials are warning consumers about an ongoing egg recall by Milo’s Poultry Farms LLC, based in Bonduel, Wisconsin. The recall started in September and has now been upgraded to a Class I status, indicating that the eggs may cause serious health consequences or death. The recall affects all eggs branded under “Milo’s Poultry Farms” and “Tony’s Fresh Market” with any expiration dates.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed the recall’s Class I status, stating that it poses a reasonable probability of serious adverse health consequences or death. The recall impacts over four million eggs or 345,417 dozen cartons. These eggs were sold in stores and restaurants in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Michigan during the previous summer. The recall was initiated after the FDA discovered that environmental samples tested positive for salmonella, which was also related to an ongoing investigation regarding a salmonella outbreak.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that a total of 65 consumers fell ill from the contaminated eggs, with 24 requiring hospitalization. However, there have been no reported deaths related to this outbreak. Cases were reported in various states including Virginia, Iowa, Minnesota, Colorado, Utah, and California. Salmonella infection can lead to symptoms such as fever, vomiting, and dehydration, posing a higher risk for senior citizens and children.

Consumers are advised to dispose of any eggs under the “Milo’s Poultry Farms” and “Tony’s Fresh Market” brands to prevent potential illness. The CDC recommends cleaning any items or surfaces that may have come in contact with these recalled eggs. Concerned customers can contact Milo’s Poultry Farms directly at (715) 758-6709 for further information or assistance. The recall is a precautionary measure to prevent further illnesses associated with the consumption of contaminated eggs.

It is important for consumers to follow the FDA and CDC recommendations regarding the egg recall to avoid potential health risks associated with salmonella contamination. This situation serves as a reminder of the importance of food safety and proper handling of food products to prevent the spread of foodborne illnesses. By staying informed and taking appropriate actions, individuals can protect themselves and their families from the harmful effects of consuming contaminated products. The cooperation of consumers, officials, and food companies is crucial in preventing and addressing food recalls to ensure public health and safety.
