European Elections: LR unveils its program, between protectionism and fight against norms

The Republicans (LR) candidate for the European elections, François-Xavier Bellamy, presented a detailed program consisting of 59 measures on 58 pages for the upcoming elections on June 9th. The introduction by their lead candidate emphasizes the potential for success, asserting that there is no inevitability in the current situation. The party aims to address what they see as a “double decline” of Europe worldwide and France at a continental level. Despite being only at 6.5% in the polls and facing the risk of losing all seats in the European Parliament if they fall below 5%, LR remains determined to challenge the dominance of the ruling party and the National Rally.

LR’s strategy revolves around breaking free from the constraints imposed by the presidential camp and the National Rally. The party focuses on showcasing its supposed competence, even if its governance experience is deemed outdated. The president of LR, Eric Ciotti, praises the work done on the program by Emmanuelle Mignon, who played a key role in Nicolas Sarkozy’s presidential project in 2007. While not explicitly endorsing sovereignty, many of LR’s proposals hint at a form of European self-reliance and a desire for the EU to adopt a more assertive stance on global trade.

The party proposes the implementation of a “Made in Europe 2030” plan to relocate certain activities and reindustrialize the continent. They advocate for a “European preference” in public procurement markets, especially in comparison to countries like China that prioritize their industries and restrict access to their markets for European companies. LR criticizes the EU for what they see as excessive and unnecessary regulations that hinder wealth creation, proposing a 25% reduction in the European public service in legislative functions to address this issue.

Despite being at a disadvantage in the polls, LR remains steadfast in their commitment to assert their vision for Europe and France. The party’s focus on European self-sufficiency and reduced bureaucracy resonates with their core values of competence and pragmatism in governance. By highlighting the need for a stronger European presence in global trade and a reduction in unnecessary regulations, LR aims to differentiate itself from the ruling party and the National Rally.

Overall, LR’s detailed program for the European elections reflects their ambition to address the challenges facing Europe and France. By proposing measures to enhance European self-reliance, reduce bureaucracy, and strengthen the continent’s industrial base, the party seeks to carve out a distinct position in the political landscape. Despite facing tough competition in the upcoming elections, LR remains determined to assert their vision for Europe and advocate for a more assertive role for the EU in global affairs.
