Dubai Floods: Airport chaos, Metro station sleepovers and water shortages persist

In the United Arab Emirates, heavy rainfall has caused extensive flooding, disrupting services and transportation across the desert state. What would typically be a year’s worth of rain fell in just 12 hours, leading to power outages and water shortages in many homes and businesses. Residents found themselves trapped inside their villas with flooded roads outside, with some even resorting to using surfboards and jet skis for transportation. Despite the challenges, communities banded together to help each other, sharing food and supplies with those in need.

The UAE saw over 100 mm of rain in some areas, setting a 75-year record for rainfall in the country. The National Centre of Meteorology issued a red warning, closing schools, offices, and banks, and advising residents to stay home and park their vehicles in safe areas. Police had to block dangerous roads while pumping trucks worked to remove excess water from the streets. The Ministry of Interior assured residents of ongoing efforts to restore normalcy, although certain parts of the city remained submerged, making access for maintenance and repairs difficult.

Dubai’s airport faced significant disruptions, with travelers unable to fly and check-ins suspended until further notice. Some passengers were stranded at the airport, while others who had landed before the suspension faced challenges in getting home. Communication with airlines’ customer support was also affected by the high volume of inquiries due to the weather conditions. For those stranded overseas, delays in returning home following the Eid holiday added to the frustration of being unable to reach Dubai.

One resident, Fanny Balleuil, found herself stranded in Bahrain after her flight to Dubai was diverted. However, she saw the situation as an opportunity to explore a country she might not have visited otherwise. Despite the challenges posed by the floods, communities came together to support each other, sharing resources and providing assistance to those in need. The combination of heavy rain, power outages, and flooding brought out both the difficulties and the resilience of the residents in the UAE.

For some, the floods brought out the best in their communities, with neighbors connecting and supporting each other during the crisis. Businesses like Beiruti Flame Grill were completely submerged, with staff using rafts to navigate the neighborhood. The government issued warnings and closures to ensure public safety, while emergency response teams worked to clear the waterlogged areas. Cleanup efforts are ongoing, with field teams focusing on restoring normalcy and ensuring the safety of all affected areas.

Despite the challenges posed by the record-breaking rainfall, residents of the UAE came together to support each other through the crisis. While disruptions to services and transportation caused frustration for many, others saw the situation as an opportunity for positive experiences and community bonding. As the cleanup efforts continue and services are restored, the resilience and cooperation of the residents will play a crucial role in overcoming the effects of the floods and returning life to normal in the UAE.
