At Glières and Izieu, Emmanuel Macron fights against the “spirit of defeat” and “for memory”

Emmanuel Macron marked the 80th anniversary of the Liberation by attending a ceremony at the national necropolis of Morette in Thônes, Haute-Savoie on April 7, 2024. He began the commemorations by denouncing the “spirit of defiance and the spirit of defeat” that had taken hold in France in recent years. Macron highlighted the unity and resilience shown by the martyrs of Glières during World War II and emphasized the importance of self-love as a nation.

The President emphasized the complex nature of the resistance at the Glières plateau in 1944, where French resistance fighters faced not only Nazis, but also Vichy forces and French collaborators. Macron highlighted the tragic death of Lieutenant Tom Morel at the hands of a Vichy commander, and pointed out that the Nazi assault on the plateau included French militia and Vichy forces. The commemoration ceremony was attended by thousands of people, including military personnel, students, and political figures.

During the battle at Glières, two-thirds of the resistance fighters were captured, and many were killed or went missing. Macron acknowledged the sacrifices made by these individuals and described the plateau of Glières as a crucial location for the Resistance movement, but also a site of French tragedy. He emphasized the need to remember those who stood up against oppression and refused to submit, contrasting them with those who chose to collaborate or stay silent.

Macron’s speech resonated with contemporary events, as he highlighted the importance of resisting oppression and standing up for what is right in the face of adversity. In a time when some political factions are hesitant to take a firm stance against foreign aggression, Macron’s words served as a reminder of the courage and determination shown by the martyrs of Glières. The ceremony also featured remarks from Gérard Métral, president of the Glières Association, who emphasized the significance of those who dared to resist during wartime.

Overall, Macron’s commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Liberation at the Glières plateau was a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by French resistance fighters during World War II. The ceremony honored the memory of those who fought against Nazi occupation and Vichy collaboration, and underscored the importance of remembering the past to build a better future. Macron’s speech also urged people to reflect on the lessons of history and to stand up against tyranny and oppression in all its forms.
