Art Adviser in New York Accused of Alleged Ponzi Scheme to Have Collection Auctioned Off

Lisa Schiff’s private art collection is set to go up for auction next month in New York City as a means to pay off some of her significant debt. Schiff, who was once a key figure in the city’s art scene, worked with high-profile clients such as Leonardo DiCaprio and real estate heiress Candace Barasch. However, following a declaration of bankruptcy, her collection is now being liquidated in the hopes of repaying former clients who have become close friends.

The collection consists of around 200 works by well-known artists such as Damien Hirst, Dennis Hopper, and Judy Chicago, among others. The works are expected to fetch around $2 million in total. However, there is concern within the art world that the scandal surrounding Schiff’s collection may impact prices at the auction. Despite this, there may be an opportunity for bargain hunters or long-term investors to secure valuable pieces from the auction.

Schiff is accused of running a Ponzi scheme, using funds entrusted to her by clients to finance her own lavish lifestyle. She allegedly owes millions to dozens of collectors, including a substantial debt to American Express. The fall of her business relationships with clients such as Thomas Hagerty and Adam Sheffer occurred when she failed to pay for a $2.5 million painting, leading to disputes and legal action against her.

Despite the financial dealings that led to accusations of fraud, Schiff’s business relationships with her clients were deeply personal, involving shared experiences like family events and travels. Schiff’s rapid rise in the art world came after working at prominent art galleries including Phillips and Edward Tyler Nahem Fine Art. Her ability to establish trust and connections led to her representing high-profile clients and dealing in valuable artworks.

However, some art world insiders question Schiff’s credibility as an art adviser, suggesting that she may have been more of a “web spinner” than a legitimate dealer. Nevertheless, there are those who still hold a favorable view of Schiff, attributing her mistakes to being in over her head rather than criminal intent. There is potential for Schiff to make a comeback in the art world despite the scandal surrounding her collection and the accusations of fraud she faces. The auction of her collection represents a turning point in Schiff’s career and a chance for collectors to acquire works previously owned by a controversial figure in the art world.
