US-China relations have been strained by the US’ increasing presence in the region and deployment of warships and fighter jets in areas like the Taiwan Strait and South China Sea, which has angered Chinese leaders. China has accused the US of using the Philippines as a tool to escalate tensions in the South China Sea. US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin recently met with China’s Defence Minister Dong Jun in Singapore, where Austin emphasized the importance of freedom of navigation under international law, particularly in the South China Sea, according to a Pentagon statement.

Dong responded by accusing the US of stoking tensions through their military presence in the region, further highlighting the growing divide between the two nations. Tensions between the US and China have been concerning for Southeast Asia, according to Marcos, who called for both countries to work towards resolving disputes to maintain regional stability. Marcos also emphasized that the South China Sea dispute is not just a regional issue but has global implications, with the peace and freedom of navigation in the South China Sea being a critical concern for the international community.

The Philippines and China have a history of maritime territorial disputes that have escalated under the leadership of Marcos, who has been firm in asserting the Philippines’ claim over its territory. Marcos stated that the peace and stability of the South China Sea, as well as freedom of navigation, are crucial global issues that go beyond just the Asia-Pacific region. He emphasized that the rivalry between the US and China is impacting the strategic choices of regional states and exacerbating tensions, calling for both countries to manage their rivalry responsibly for the continued stability of the region.

The meeting between US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin and China’s Defence Minister Dong Jun highlighted the ongoing tensions between the two nations, with the US advocating for freedom of navigation in key maritime areas and China accusing the US of provocation through its military presence. The escalation of tensions between the US and China has raised concerns in Southeast Asia, with Marcos urging both countries to prioritize resolving disputes to avoid further destabilization in the region. The South China Sea dispute, as emphasized by Marcos, has become a global issue that requires the attention and cooperation of the international community to ensure peace and security in the region.

The rivalry between the US and China has created security dilemmas and exacerbated flashpoints in the Asia-Pacific region, causing tensions to escalate and impacting the strategic decisions of regional states. Marcos stressed the importance of responsible management of this rivalry by both countries to uphold stability and peace in the region. The dispute over the South China Sea has implications beyond just regional concerns, with Marcos highlighting the need for global stakeholders to address the issues at hand. The peace and freedom of navigation in the South China Sea are critical matters that require international cooperation to maintain stability and security worldwide.
