After latest Biden approvals, 871,000 people receive job-based student loan forgiveness.

This article covers President Joe Biden’s recent approval of student loan forgiveness for teachers, nurses, charity workers, and other public service workers. The total number of loan forgiveness approvals under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program has increased to nearly 900,000, totaling $62.5 billion in relief. The Biden administration has been working to improve the PSLF program, which incentivizes work in underserved areas, by streamlining the application process and updating regulations.

In an effort to address the longstanding issues with the PSLF program, the Biden administration has implemented waivers to remedy past problems and make the program more equitable. The Education Department has also created online tools to make it easier for borrowers to apply for loan forgiveness. As a result of these efforts, the program has seen a significant increase in approvals, with nearly 900,000 borrowers receiving relief, compared to only around 7,000 prior to the administration’s fixes.

Despite the improvements, borrowers are still facing challenges with ongoing loan servicing issues, payment miscalculations, and processing delays. Senate Democrats have called for an inquiry into the Education Department’s contracted loan servicer, MOHELA, following reports of difficulties faced by borrowers seeking assistance. While progress has been made, there is still work to be done to ensure that borrowers receive the relief they are entitled to under the PSLF program.

One of the Biden administration’s key initiatives to improve the PSLF program, the IDR Account Adjustment, is set to end next month. This temporary program has allowed borrowers to receive credit towards loan forgiveness for periods that may not have counted previously. Borrowers with non-Direct federal student loans are required to consolidate their loans via the federal Direct consolidation program by April 30th in order to qualify for the PSLF benefits of the account adjustment. Additionally, borrowers seeking loan forgiveness through PSLF must certify their employment by completing an online process.

In conclusion, President Biden’s efforts to fix the PSLF program have led to a significant increase in loan forgiveness approvals, providing relief to thousands of borrowers who have dedicated their careers to public service work. While progress has been made, there are still challenges to be addressed, including ongoing loan servicing issues and processing delays. With the IDR Account Adjustment program set to end next month, borrowers are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to receive credit towards loan forgiveness under the PSLF program.
