Ilona Maher, a member of Team USA’s rugby team competing at the 2024 Paris Olympics, recently addressed a comment on her TikTok regarding her BMI. Maher proudly shared that she has a BMI of 29.3 and is considered overweight, weighing 200 pounds at 5 feet 10 inches tall. She has faced shame and embarrassment due to her weight in the past, but has since learned that BMI isn’t an accurate reflection of her health or abilities. As an athlete with a lot of muscle mass, BMI may not accurately represent her fitness level.

Maher highlighted the importance of not letting BMI define her capabilities, emphasizing that it doesn’t account for muscle mass or athletic performance. She sought advice from her dietitian, who confirmed that BMI is not a reliable indicator for athletes. Maher has 170 pounds of lean muscle mass, which contributes to her overall strength and fitness. Despite being labeled as “overweight” by BMI standards, Maher is proud to be representing Team USA at the Olympics.

In addition to discussing her BMI, Maher has also used her social media platform to normalize cellulite and celebrate different body types. She shared images of her thighs to show that cellulite is normal and doesn’t affect athletic ability. Maher believes that all body types are worthy and capable of achieving great things, from gymnasts to rugby players to shot putters. She encourages her followers to see themselves in athletes of all shapes and sizes.

As the Paris Olympics began, Maher posted a TikTok focusing on the diverse body types of the athletes competing. She emphasized that all body types are valid and capable of achieving remarkable feats. Maher’s message of body positivity and self-acceptance resonates with many who may feel insecure or judged based on societal standards of beauty and health. She is using her platform to challenge stereotypes and promote inclusion in sports.

Maher’s openness about her weight and body image serves as a powerful example of confidence and self-acceptance. By sharing her experiences and thoughts on BMI, cellulite, and body diversity, she is advocating for a more inclusive and supportive environment in sports and beyond. Maher’s message of embracing all body types and valuing individual abilities is an important reminder to focus on what truly matters – health, strength, and personal happiness. As she competes at the Paris Olympics, Maher continues to inspire others to be proud of who they are, regardless of societal expectations.
