During the Computex tech conference in Taipei, AMD announced new artificial intelligence chips, highlighting AI as their number one priority. The company introduced the Ryzen AI 300 series for next-generation AI laptops, expected to compete with Intel’s Lunar Lake and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X. In collaboration with Microsoft, these chips will power laptops equipped with Microsoft’s AI chatbot Copilot. AMD also unveiled the Ryzen 9000 series for desktops, claiming them to be the world’s fastest consumer PC processors for gaming and content creation, with both lines set to launch in July. This follows AMD’s April announcement of new processors, the Ryzen Pro 8040 for laptops and the Ryzen Pro 8000 for desktops, capable of running AI workloads.

The competition in the AI chip market is heating up, with chip firms such as Nvidia racing to launch faster and more powerful processors. Nvidia recently introduced its next generation Rubina AI chips to succeed the Blackwell model announced in March. Both Nvidia and AMD have committed to releasing new AI chip technology annually to stay competitive. AMD provided a detailed roadmap for their data center chips, with the Instinct MI325X accelerators planned for availability in the fourth quarter of this year. The company also previewed the Instinct MI350 series set for release in 2025 and the Instinct MI400 series planned for 2026. In addition, AMD highlighted the upcoming fifth-generation EPYC server processors to be launched in the second half of the year to further advance performance and efficiency in the EPYC processor family.

Similar to Nvidia, AMD outsources chip manufacturing to foundries, including the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company. The Ryzen AI 300, Ryzen 9000, and 5th-gen EPYC chips will be built on the latest Zen 5 architecture. AMD emphasized that the Zen 5 architecture would be versatile, powering everything from supercomputers to data centers and PCs. These new chip releases demonstrate AMD’s commitment to innovation and leadership in the AI and computing market, setting the stage for advancements in AI technology that will transform various industries and improve quality of life.

Lisa Su, AMD’s chair and CEO, heralded the beginning of an exciting era for the industry as AI continues to evolve and reshape the computing market. With a focus on AI transformation across businesses and daily life, AMD aims to position itself as a leader in the competitive AI chip market. The new chips unveiled at Computex, including the Ryzen AI 300 and Ryzen 9000 series, are designed to offer superior performance for gaming, content creation, and AI workloads. By partnering with Microsoft and providing advanced server processors like the EPYC series, AMD is leveraging AI technology to drive innovation and meet the growing demands of the market.

As the competition intensifies, AMD and Nvidia are accelerating the development of AI chip technology to meet the increasing demand for faster and more powerful processors. With a commitment to releasing new AI chip tech annually, AMD is poised to stay ahead in the AI race, alongside Nvidia and other competitors. The detailed data center chip roadmap laid out by AMD highlights the company’s strategic focus on innovation and advancement in AI technology. By introducing new chip architectures and partnerships with industry leaders like Microsoft, AMD is broadening its reach in the AI market and setting the stage for future developments in computing and AI technology.
