Four presidents of French overseas territories are calling for the immediate withdrawal of a reform. The presidents of Guadeloupe, Martinique, Guyane, and La Réunion have jointly demanded the immediate withdrawal of the electoral reform in New Caledonia. They argue that only a political solution can put an end to the increasing violence and prevent a civil war. The signatories of the statement, including the president of La Réunion Huguette Bello, are urging the government to withdraw the proposed constitutional reform that aims to change the electoral body for elections in New Caledonia-Kanaky.

The statement has also been signed by around twenty parliamentarians from these overseas territories, as well as French Polynesia, Saint-Martin, and Saint-Barthélemy. The signatories argue that the current security response, which includes exceptional measures like bans on movement, house arrests, and increased police presence, does not provide a solution to the ongoing issues. They fear that these repressive measures could lead to further violence and hinder the desired return to calm in the region.

The presidents and parliamentarians believe that a peaceful dialogue is essential in resolving the situation in New Caledonia. They emphasize the importance of withdrawing the proposed constitutional reform as a necessary step towards fostering a more peaceful and constructive dialogue. The signatories stress that a political solution is the only way to effectively address the root causes of the conflict and prevent the escalation of violence in the region.

The demand for the withdrawal of the reform comes amidst ongoing tensions in New Caledonia, where there have been instances of violence and unrest. The signatories argue that the current security measures are not enough to address the underlying issues and may exacerbate the situation further. They are calling for a more comprehensive and politically-oriented approach to resolving the conflict and preventing further violence in the region.

The joint statement by the presidents of the French overseas territories highlights the significance of political dialogue and cooperation in finding a lasting solution to the crisis in New Caledonia. The signatories stress the importance of addressing the root causes of the conflict and working towards a peaceful resolution that can help prevent further violence and instability in the region. They call on the government to act decisively and withdraw the proposed constitutional reform as a crucial step towards ending the violence and fostering a more peaceful and inclusive dialogue in New Caledonia.

In conclusion, the four presidents and the signatories of the statement are united in their call for the immediate withdrawal of the electoral reform in New Caledonia. They emphasize the importance of a political solution to the conflict, as well as the need for dialogue and cooperation in order to prevent further violence and instability in the region. The signatories stress the urgency of taking action to address the root causes of the conflict and work towards a peaceful resolution that can promote stability and reconciliation in New Caledonia.
