Senegal: Paris refrains from responding to Ousmane Sonko’s harsh comments against France

In a political event in Dakar on May 15, 2024, the Senegalese Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, and the founder of LFI, Jean-Luc Melenchon, spoke about the relations between Africa and Europe. Sonko criticized French authorities for their lack of response to the persecution his party faced, referencing violent crackdowns on protests in 2021 and 2023. The French government has responded cautiously to Sonko’s comments, with no official statements from the Elysée or the Quai d’Orsay, in an effort to avoid further anti-French sentiment following recent electoral suspensions.

French authorities had been in contact with Sonko during his imprisonment in June 2023 and continued to communicate with his associates to ensure respect for electoral processes. Sonko, speaking both as a Prime Minister and President of his party, criticized France’s imposition of embargoes on Sahel countries where military coups occurred. He also questioned the presence of foreign military bases in Africa, suggesting that internal conflicts should be resolved internally, without external interference. The French government is currently evaluating how to reduce its military presence on the continent.

Sonko also discussed the issue of LGBTQ rights as a potential future point of conflict, stating that Western countries are trying to impose their views on these issues. He called for restraint, respect, and tolerance from the West. Melenchon, on the other hand, expressed his support for LGBTQ rights and emphasized the importance of respecting differing viewpoints. Their differing opinions sparked a reaction from the audience, with some students showing disapproval. Melenchon praised Sonko’s honesty and directness, noting the unconventional nature of his sincerity.

Melenchon concluded his visit to Senegal on the island of Gorée, known for its history of human exploitation and slavery. The visit highlighted the importance of acknowledging historical injustices and promoting dialogue between African and European nations. The French government continues to navigate its diplomatic relations with Senegal and other African countries, particularly in light of recent political developments and shifts in power dynamics. It remains to be seen how these discussions and interactions will impact future collaborations and relationships between the two regions.

the relations between France and Senegal, and the broader implications for Africa-Europe relations. The event involving Sonko and Melenchon shed light on the complexities of diplomatic engagement between the two continents, with differing viewpoints on issues such as LGBTQ rights and military presence. As the relationship between France and Senegal evolves, it will be crucial for both sides to navigate these challenges with respect and openness to dialogue. Ultimately, the interactions between Sonko, Melenchon, and other political figures will shape the future of cooperation and partnership between Africa and Europe.
