In Brazil, Emmanuel Macron and Lula display a united front against climate change

Emmanuel Macron and Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, known as “Lula,” met in a jungle setting in northern Brazil, with spotlights taking over from the sun at nightfall. The two presidents displayed a united front on climate issues during Macron’s state visit to Brazil. Despite disagreements on conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, they made a joint call for prioritizing the fight against global warming. Macron pledged support for Lula ahead of Brazil’s hosting of COP30 in Belem in 2025, highlighting shared interests in combating deforestation and protecting indigenous rights in the Amazon.

The meeting between Macron and Lula marks a shift in diplomatic relations, with Macron aiming to deepen ties with Brazil to strengthen France’s position against countries in the “Global South.” This comes after a previous dispute in 2019 when Macron clashed with Lula’s predecessor, Jair Bolsonaro, over the Amazon fires and called for international mobilization. By showing solidarity with Lula on climate issues, Macron seeks to avoid past mistakes and demonstrate a commitment to environmental protection in the Amazon region, while also appealing to their respective voter bases.

Lula’s environmental record is seen as more favorable compared to Macron’s in France, as he managed to reduce deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon by 50% during his previous term in office. Despite facing opposition from pro-Bolsonaro lawmakers in Congress, Lula has set a goal of achieving zero deforestation by 2030. Indigenous leaders present at the event expressed support for Lula’s efforts, acknowledging the challenges he faces in navigating political interests tied to agribusiness and environmental conservation in Brazil.

The visit to Brazil also served as an opportunity for Macron and Lula to discuss broader geopolitical issues and cooperation between the two countries. Both leaders emphasized the need for collaborative efforts on climate change and sustainable development, aligning their agendas with the upcoming COP30 summit in Belem. The symbolic gesture of awarding an indigenous chief, Raoni Metuktire, with the Legion of Honor highlighted their shared commitment to protecting the Amazon rainforest and indigenous rights.

Overall, Macron and Lula’s meeting in Brazil signaled a strategic alliance on climate and environmental issues, with both leaders seeking to position themselves as global leaders in the fight against deforestation and climate change. By overcoming past differences and emphasizing common goals, they showcased a united front on key challenges facing the Amazon region and the wider world. The visit underscored the importance of international cooperation and mutual support in addressing pressing environmental and social concerns, while also strengthening diplomatic ties between France and Brazil.
