Zelensky Promises Further ‘Retaliation’ against Russia as Prisoners of War are Swapped

During Ukrainian Independence Day, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced further “retribution” against Russia as Kyiv and Moscow agreed to exchange 230 prisoners. Zelensky also signed a law banning the Russian-linked branch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which he described as a step to free Ukraine from Moscow’s influence. Kyiv marked its independence amidst a tense moment in the ongoing war with Russia, as Ukraine continues its offensive on Kursk, drawing sharp responses from both sides. Zelensky reiterated his commitment to pushing back Russia and holding them accountable for their actions.

As Ukraine celebrated Independence Day, a Russian strike on the eastern city of Kostyantynivka resulted in the death of five people. The impact of the war was evident as a young boy and his dog observed emergency responders remove bodies covered by sheets. Evacuations from areas at risk of Russian advancement were carried out, while both Kyiv and Moscow announced the return of 115 captives each as part of a deal facilitated by the United Arab Emirates. Zelensky shared images of Ukrainian prisoners wrapped in flags, highlighting the toll the conflict has taken on individuals involved.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz reaffirmed Berlin’s support for Ukraine, despite a planned reduction in military aid. European leaders also expressed their solidarity with Ukraine, recognizing the importance of the country’s fight for independence. Reports of missing Russian conscripts in Kursk raised concerns, with images of young servicemen being released by Russia circulating online. Ukraine’s efforts to distance itself from the Russian church were evident in a new law banning the Russian-linked branch of the church, drawing criticism from Moscow’s Orthodox Church leader.

Ukraine’s military intelligence claimed a successful attack on an ammunition depot in Russia’s Voronezh region as part of its retaliation against Russian forces. Russia responded by reporting the destruction of Ukrainian drones in various regions, leading to evacuations and states of emergency in affected areas. The escalation of attacks and countermeasures demonstrated the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, with Zelensky emphasizing the need for retribution against Russia for its actions. The situation remained volatile as both sides continued to engage in military maneuvers and exchanges.
