Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently had a call with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to discuss various issues, including Ukraine’s peace summit in Switzerland on June 15-16. Zelensky invited Orban to the event, which will involve leaders from several European countries. The president emphasized the importance of Hungary’s involvement in the peace process and regional security. They also talked about resolving bilateral issues and Ukraine’s aspirations for EU accession. Hungary has maintained close ties with Russia, opposing sanctions against Moscow amid the conflict with Ukraine.

The conversation between Zelensky and Orban comes amidst efforts to strengthen relations between Ukraine and Hungary. Ukrainian officials have been working to organize an official visit by Orban, the first in 14 years. The Hungarian foreign minister previously stated that the time for Orban to meet Zelensky had not yet arrived. However, there have been positive signs in recent weeks regarding Ukraine’s fulfillment of Budapest’s demands on national minorities issues. This indicates progress in addressing one of the key areas of contention between the two countries.

Hungary’s stance on Ukraine’s national minority issues has been a point of contention in their relationship. Hungarian State Secretary Tristan Azbej mentioned positive signs in recent talks regarding Ukraine’s compliance with Budapest’s demands in this area. Resolving these issues is crucial for improving bilateral ties between the two countries. The discussions between the leaders reflect a willingness to address mutual concerns and work towards a better relationship. This could pave the way for further cooperation in trade, energy, and logistics.

The upcoming peace summit in Switzerland presents an opportunity for Ukraine and Hungary to engage in dialogue on regional security and peace efforts. The involvement of European leaders and the international community underscores the importance of finding a resolution to the conflict in Ukraine. Zelensky’s outreach to Orban demonstrates a commitment to engaging with neighboring countries and seeking support for Ukraine’s goals, including EU accession. The dialogue between the two leaders is part of broader efforts to build partnerships and strengthen diplomatic ties.

Despite differences in their positions on certain issues, Zelensky and Orban have maintained communication and engaged in discussions to address bilateral concerns. The emphasis on good-neighborly relations and cooperation reflects a desire to move past disagreements and focus on shared interests. The upcoming summit provides a platform for further dialogue and cooperation between Ukraine and Hungary. By working together, the two countries can contribute to peace and stability in the region and strengthen their partnership for the benefit of both nations and the broader European community.
