Young people are embracing ‘fashion braces’ as the latest trendy accessory

The trend of fashion braces, fake orthodontic wires that people wear as an accessory, is gaining popularity among young people. Previously, braces were seen as unattractive and undesirable, but now they are considered a fashionable adornment. Celebrities like Coi Leray are seen flaunting their braces on the red carpet, inspiring others to adopt the trend. Accessories like thin-framed glasses are also contributing to the geek chic look that is in style. Faux braces can be purchased online from vendors like Etsy and Amazon, or through individual businesses like V’Adorned, run by 23-year-old Favour Egwu in Nigeria.

Entrepreneurs like Kayo Odom in Georgia are selling fashion braces for as low as $55, marketing them as a way to achieve the look of braces without the actual dental work. Odom’s DIY kits have received positive reviews, with many customers saying they received compliments while wearing the braces. Women aged 18-30, who cannot afford braces or want them for a short period, make up the majority of Odom’s customer base. There are also older individuals, like 31-year-old Nina Samuels from North Carolina, who purchase fashion braces as a way to express their unique style and embrace their individuality.

Although fashion braces are trendy, they come with potential risks and health hazards. Unlike real braces that are applied by licensed professionals, fashion braces are self-applied and may contain dangerous heavy metals. They could lead to tooth decay, mouth sores, or even choking if they come loose. In some countries, such as Thailand, fake braces have been banned due to health concerns. Orthodontists like Dr. Sable Staller do not recommend the use of fashion braces, as they can disrupt the natural movement of teeth once they are glued on.

The popularity of fashion braces is part of a larger trend among Gen Z to embrace imperfections and showcase their uniqueness. Dr. Staller attributes this trend to the influence of social media and the accessibility of information online, which has helped people realize that what may have been considered embarrassing in the past is now celebrated as part of one’s individuality. Other beauty and fashion trends, like pimple patches, also reflect this shift towards accepting and even highlighting imperfections. Despite the risks associated with fashion braces, their popularity continues to grow as young people seek new ways to express themselves and stand out from the crowd.
