You could get kicked off the plane for getting too comfortable during your flight

Some social media users on TikTok have shared videos of their experiences flying with fellow passengers who have taken off their socks during commercial flights, leading to calls for greater education on airplane etiquette. Many airlines, such as American Airlines and United Airlines, have strict policies against passengers being barefoot or wearing offensive clothing while on board. These policies are intended to create a safe environment for all passengers, with consequences including denial of entry to the plane or potential removal. Southwest Airlines and JetBlue Airways have specific age restrictions on passengers being barefoot, with staff able to remove those over the age of 5 who are not disabled and require being barefoot.

While many U.S.-based airlines have strict policies against passengers being barefoot, some foreign airlines like Air Canada, Air France, and British Airways do not have such rules listed in their conduct contracts. When airlines do have no-barefoot policies, enforcement is left up to the flight attendants. Etiquette expert Jacqueline Whitmore suggests keeping your feet covered while flying to prevent the transmission of germs and maintain hygiene, as being barefoot in a public space can be considered rude and unhygienic by fellow passengers. Whitmore recommends wearing clean socks, slippers, or comfortable shoes to maintain comfort and hygiene while flying, especially in consideration of others.

American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Spirit Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and JetBlue Airways were reached out to for comment on their policies regarding passengers being barefoot on flights. Maintaining a safe and comfortable environment for all passengers is a priority for these airlines, which is why they have strict policies in place regarding bare feet and offensive clothing. While some may argue for the comfort of being barefoot while flying, it is important to consider the impact of this action on fellow passengers in terms of hygiene and overall flying experience.

The “conditions of carriage” contracts for American Airlines and United Airlines make it clear that bare feet and offensive clothing are not allowed on board, with potential consequences including denial of transport. Southwest Airlines and JetBlue Airways have age restrictions in place to prevent those above a certain age from being barefoot while flying. The enforcement of these policies is left up to the flight attendants, who may remove passengers who do not comply. Whitmore reiterates the importance of maintaining good hygiene practices while flying, and suggests wearing socks, slippers, or comfortable shoes for the comfort and safety of both the passenger and fellow travelers.

Ultimately, while many airlines have policies against passengers being barefoot on flights, enforcement may vary and is typically left to the discretion of the flight attendants. Maintaining hygiene and considering the comfort of fellow passengers are important factors to consider while flying, especially in a confined space like an airplane. While some may prefer to go barefoot for comfort reasons, it is important to be mindful of others and follow the rules and guidelines set forth by the airlines. By wearing appropriate footwear and considering the impact on others, passengers can help ensure a safe and pleasant flying experience for all.
