Wrexham, a soccer team co-owned by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, is set to kick off their domestic season in the third tier of English soccer after a successful preseason tour in the United States. The team, which hasn’t played at this level in 19 years, was purchased for $2.5 million in 2021 and has since made significant progress. The Emmy Award-winning documentary “Welcome to Wrexham” has been chronicling the Hollywood stars’ venture into soccer ownership and has garnered a large following. The team also attracted up to 35,000 spectators during their North American tour, where they played exhibition matches against Premier League teams.

CBS Sports recently announced a four-year deal to broadcast matches from the English Football League, highlighting Wrexham as an attraction. With eyes from around the world now on the team, especially after back-to-back promotions, Wrexham is aiming to make its way up to the Premier League. However, the challenges are expected to increase in their current division, League One, as they face stiff competition from clubs that have already spent significant amounts in the transfer window to strengthen their squads. Despite this, Wrexham has made some key signings, including players from Premier League clubs, showcasing their ambition.

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson acknowledges the tough road ahead in League One, especially with clubs like Birmingham, which has made substantial investments in player acquisitions. The ownership of Reynolds and McElhenney has had a positive impact on the team and its players, with a focus not only on the club but also on the community. As the team enters this new phase with the underdog tag, the goal for the season is likely to consolidate their position and continue building on the progress they have made over the past few years. While they may not be the biggest team in the league, Wrexham is prepared to embrace their status as underdogs and continue working towards their ultimate goal of reaching the Premier League.

The journey of Wrexham from the depths of non-league football to the cusp of the Premier League has captured the imagination of fans around the world. The team’s rise, fueled by the vision of its celebrity owners and the dedication of its players, has been a remarkable story of perseverance and ambition. As they embark on a new season in League One, Wrexham will face new challenges and tougher competition, but with the support of their passionate fanbase and the leadership of Reynolds and McElhenney, the Dragons are ready to take on whatever comes their way. The Premier League might be the ultimate destination, but for now, Wrexham is focused on making their mark in League One and continuing their remarkable journey through the English soccer pyramid.
