Work Calendar 2024: Holidays in Holy Week and all the bridges throughout the year by regions.

In 2024, the Spanish labor calendar will include 14 non-recoverable, paid, and obligatory public holidays. This includes 12 national and autonomous holidays and 2 local holidays determined by each municipality. Among the 12 national and autonomous holidays, 8 are mandatory and cannot be replaced by the communities, including New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Labor Day, the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, National Day, All Saints’ Day, Constitution Day, and Christmas Day. The regions may choose to move a holiday that falls on a Sunday to the following Monday, but this will not apply to any of the holidays in 2024.

In addition to the 8 mandatory holidays, each region must choose from the Three Wise Men Day, Maundy Thursday, and Immaculate Conception Day to enjoy or substitute with another meaningful day for the citizens. Next year will have 4 long weekends nationwide, with public holidays on Mondays or Fridays. The holidays falling on Mondays or Fridays in 2024 will be New Year’s Day, Good Friday, All Saints’ Day, and Constitution Day. The Holy Week will begin on March 28th and 29th, bringing a long weekend for most regions except Catalonia, which has a holiday on Easter Monday.

Some regions have opted to add an extra holiday in 2024, but declare it as “retrievable pay,” meaning employees do not have to work on that day but make up for the hours at a later date agreed upon with their employers. These regions include Catalonia, choosing from January 6th, April 1st, June 24th, or December 26th for retrieval; Valencia, selecting June 24th as retrievable pay; and Ceuta, picking October 2nd. These regions will enjoy 13 holidays, with one of them being a retrievable pay day.

Before the Official State Bulletin publishes the labor calendar for the following year, these are the common and regional holidays confirmed by the Autonomous Communities and some details about each region. The holidays will vary from region to region, with each region having a different number of public holidays and days off due to regional or national significance. Each region has its specific holidays based on tradition, culture, and history, with some regions offering additional holidays with the option of being retrievable pay.
