Wordle, which was invented by software engineer Josh Wardle and released to the public in October 2021, has become The New York Times’ most-played game. Since its debut, the game has seen a surge in popularity, with the number of users growing from 90 on November 1, 2021, to 300,000 on January 2, 2022. The New York Times acquired Wordle for a seven-figure fee soon after its rise to fame. One of the reasons for Wordle’s appeal is its simplicity – players have six attempts to guess a five-letter word, with color-coded tiles indicating whether the letters are in the word and in the correct position.

Josh Wardle, the creator of Wordle, explained that the decision to have five-letter words and six attempts for guessing was a result of experimentation and refinement. He found that this combination created the ideal balance of challenge and accomplishment for players. Wardle and his partner play Wordle together each morning, with Wardle admitting that he often needs four or five attempts to solve the puzzle, while his partner can consistently solve it in three. Wordle is released at midnight in each player’s local time zone, providing a daily mental challenge for fans of the game.

To assist players in solving the Wordle puzzle, Newsweek provides hints and tips for each game. For example, in one edition, the hints revealed that the answer was a five-letter word containing one vowel, starting with the letter “P”, without repeated letters, and was a verb, noun, and adjective related to the concept of squeezing or a small amount. The answer to that particular puzzle was “Pinch”, showcasing the variety of words that can be part of the game. In addition to Wordle, players can also try other word-based puzzles like Typochondria and Spellspire for additional mental stimulation.

The success of Wordle highlights the enduring popularity of word-based brainteasers, with thousands of players enjoying the daily challenge of guessing a five-letter word in six attempts. This simple but engaging game has captured the attention of players around the world, leading to its acquisition by The New York Times. Wardle’s thoughtful design choices, such as the five-letter words and six attempts limit, have contributed to the game’s widespread appeal and sense of accomplishment when players successfully solve the puzzle. As Wordle continues to be a favorite among gamers, it serves as a testament to the power of simplicity and creativity in game design.
